Framer vs WordPress for Small Business Websites

For most small service businesses, Framer is simpler to run: hosting, security and updates are handled by the platform, and editing is visual. WordPress is more flexible, with a vast range of plugins and full control over hosting, but someone has to keep the software, theme and plugins updated. Choose Framer if you want a well-designed site with few moving parts. Choose WordPress if you need specialised functionality that only a plugin provides, or you want to own and host every part of the software yourself. Before choosing, confirm website ownership and platform access remain with your business.
A note on bias: Morphic builds websites on Framer. We've tried to keep this comparison fair, and there are cases below where WordPress is the better choice.
Quick comparison
Framer | WordPress (self-hosted) | |
What it is | A hosted website builder and design tool | Open-source software you install on your own hosting |
Hosting | Included in paid site plans | Arranged separately |
Updates and security patches | Handled by the platform | Your responsibility, or your provider's |
Editing | Visual editor and CMS | Block editor, plus whatever your theme and plugins add |
Plugins and extensions | Smaller selection | Very large plugin ecosystem |
Cost model | Monthly or yearly plan per site | Software is free; you pay for hosting, premium themes and plugins, and maintenance |
Cost
WordPress itself is open-source software licensed under the GPL (WordPress.org), so the software costs nothing, but you'll pay for hosting, any premium themes or plugins, and someone's time to maintain it.
Framer charges per site. In October 2026, its pricing page listed a free plan without a custom domain, a Basic plan at $10 a month and a Pro plan at $30 a month, with limits on pages and CMS items; check the currency and tax at checkout (Framer pricing). Prices change, so confirm current plans before deciding.

Maintenance
WordPress applies minor and security updates to its core automatically on most sites, but themes, plugins and major releases need attention, and WordPress advises backing up before updating (WordPress documentation). A site with many plugins needs more care.
On Framer, the platform handles hosting and software updates. Maintenance is mostly about content: updating services, prices, photos and checking forms.

SEO
Both can rank well. What matters more is content, structure and speed.
Framer's SEO tools include custom titles and descriptions for each page, an automatically generated sitemap and robots.txt, redirects from old URLs and support for structured data (Framer help). WordPress offers the same capabilities, usually through SEO plugins, with more fine-grained control.
Flexibility
WordPress wins on flexibility. If you need membership systems, complex booking integrations, large e-commerce catalogues or a specialised plugin for your industry, WordPress is likely to have an option.
Framer suits brochure and lead-generation sites, landing pages and blogs: the kind of site most tradies, clinics and professional services firms need.

Editing
Framer's visual editor lets you change text and images directly on the page. WordPress's editor is also visual, but what you can edit depends heavily on the theme and plugins chosen.
Whichever you choose, ask your designer to show you how to make common changes before handover.
Bookings, shops and other features
Need | Framer | WordPress |
Quote request form | Built in | Built in or via a plugin |
Online booking | Through an embed or integration | Many plugins |
Large online shop | Limited; check current options | Strong, for example WooCommerce |
Memberships and logins | Limited | Many plugins |
Blog | Built-in CMS | Built in |
Feature support changes, so check each platform's current documentation for the features you need before you decide.
Which should you choose?
Choose Framer if:
You want a well-designed site with hosting and updates handled
Your site is mainly about explaining services and getting enquiries
You don't want to manage plugins
Choose WordPress if:
You need specialised functionality from a particular plugin
You want to host and control every part of the software
You have a developer or provider to maintain it
Business | Likely fit | Why |
Plumber or electrician with 5 to 10 pages | Framer | Simple pages, quick edits, little upkeep |
Cafe or local shop with a menu and contact page | Framer | Visual editing and easy updates |
Accountant or consultant | Either | Depends on blog size and integrations |
Retailer with a large online store | WordPress | Wider shop plugin support |
Business needing custom booking logic | WordPress | More plugin and developer options |
This is a general guide; individual builds vary.
