Why Is My Website Not Getting Enquiries? 11 Fixes for Small Businesses

A website stays quiet for one of two reasons: the right people are not arriving, or they arrive and leave without contacting you. These are different problems with different fixes, so the first job is to work out which one you have. Google Search Console, which is free, will tell you in a few minutes.
This guide shows how to make that diagnosis, then walks through 11 fixes, starting with the cheapest and quickest.
First check: is it a traffic problem or a conversion problem?
Open Google Search Console for your site (if it is not set up, your web designer can add you). Go to the Performance report and look at the last three months.
What you see | What it suggests | Start with |
Very few impressions (your site rarely appears in Google) | A visibility problem | Fixes 1 to 4 |
Plenty of impressions, very few clicks | Your listing doesn't attract the click | Fix 4 |
Plenty of clicks, very few enquiries | A conversion problem on the site itself | Fixes 5 to 11 |
No data at all | Search Console may not be set up correctly | Ask your web designer |
If you also use Google Analytics, check which pages visitors land on and whether they go on to your contact page. A home page with lots of visits and almost no clicks through to "Contact" or "Get a quote" is a strong sign of a conversion problem.
Your Google Business Profile performance data is worth a look too. For many local businesses, calls come from the map listing rather than the website.
Traffic fixes: when the right people aren't arriving
1. Make sure Google can find and index your pages
Search Google for site:yourdomain.com.au. If important pages are missing, Google's own guidance is to check them in Search Console's URL Inspection tool for problems such as a "noindex" tag or a robots.txt block, then request indexing (Search Console Help). Websites that were rebuilt or moved to a new domain without proper redirects often lose pages from Google this way. One practical conversion check is your website’s loading speed on both phones and desktop.
2. Say what you do and where, in plain words
Pages titled "Home", "Services" and "Welcome" give Google and customers very little to go on. Each important page should have a clear title and heading that name the service and, for local businesses, the area: "Blocked drain repairs in Melbourne's west" rather than "Our Services".
3. Get your Google Business Profile working
If you serve local customers, a complete and verified Google Business Profile is often the biggest single source of calls. A website alone rarely shows in the map results that local searchers see first.
4. Write titles and descriptions people want to click
The title and description shown in Google are your advert. If Search Console shows impressions but few clicks, rewrite them so they say exactly what you offer and why someone should choose you. Avoid stuffing them with keywords.

Conversion fixes: when visitors arrive but don't contact you
5. Make the first screen answer three questions
Within a few seconds on a phone, a visitor should know what you do, where you do it and how to contact you. A large photo with a vague slogan ("Excellence in every detail") makes them scroll and guess. Many leave instead.
6. Put the phone number where thumbs can reach it
For service businesses, many enquiries are phone calls from mobiles. Show the number at the top of every page and make it tap to call. A sticky call button at the bottom of the mobile screen is common on trade websites for this reason.
7. Shorten the enquiry form
Every extra field is a reason to give up. For a first enquiry you usually need a name, a phone number or email, the suburb and a short description of the job. Ask for the rest when you call back. Then test the form yourself: forms that silently stop sending are more common than most owners realise.
8. Show proof near the decision
Customers compare you with two or three other businesses. Put reviews, photos of real work, licences or accreditations and years in business near your call to action, not only on a separate testimonials page. Health practitioners should check AHPRA's rules before using patient reviews on their site.
9. Make each service and area clear
If a customer needs a hot water system replaced in Point Cook, they want to see a page about hot water systems that mentions the areas you cover. A single page listing 20 services in small text makes them work too hard.
10. Fix slow pages on mobile
Google recommends good Core Web Vitals scores: main content loading within 2.5 seconds, responses to taps within 200 milliseconds and minimal layout shifting (Google Search Central). You can test any page free in PageSpeed Insights. Large uncompressed photos and too many third-party scripts are the usual causes on small business sites.
11. Give a reason to contact you now
"Contact us" is not much of an invitation. "Get a fixed quote", "Book a free measure and quote" or "Call for same-day service" tells the visitor what happens next. Use one main call to action per page and repeat it at the end.

A 10-minute self-audit
Open your website on your phone, as if you were a customer who had never heard of you, and check:
Can you tell what the business does and where within five seconds?
Is the phone number visible and tappable without scrolling?
Does each main service have its own page?
Are there reviews or proof near the call to action?
Does the enquiry form work? Send yourself a test.
Does the page load quickly on mobile data?
Is there one obvious next step on every page?
Any "no" is a place to start.
Fix it or rebuild it?
Most of the fixes above can be made to an existing website. A rebuild becomes worth considering when the site cannot be edited easily, is not mobile-friendly, loads slowly because of how it was built, or no longer reflects the services you want to sell. If you are paying someone for every small text change, that is also a sign the platform is working against you.
